Bearcats break three CIncinnati records at Ohio State Fall Invitational


COLUMBUS, OHIO- The Cincinnati men’s and women’s swim and dive teams had a historic weekend at the Ohio State Fall Invitational by breaking three school records and posting 37 Cincinnati top 10 times.

The UC Men’s 200-Yard Freestyle Relay Team (1:19.43), Joleigh scream (1:00.21) in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke and Grace Gavin (54.35) in the 100m backstroke, each posted UC record times.

“We have a very special side this year and their unity as a group has created an environment conducive to success, head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said. “They’re already rewriting the record books, as shown by our mid-season performances. We need to build up this weekend and get back to work preparing for the second half of the year. I’m really proud of that.” Group of Bearcats and Where They Go.”

The Bearcats opened the three-day invitational tournament with the men’s 200-yard free relay Michael Balzerak, jet carter, Drew Hawthorne and Hunter Gubeno broke the UC record by 0.55 seconds with a time of 1:19.43.

This would be an omen of what was to come as the Bearcats would post 11 more top 10 times on the record. Including Gubeno, who moved up from fourth to third place in the 200m individual medley with a personal best of 1:45.94. He also posted the second fastest 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:41.47.

Bearcats continued to rewrite UC history at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, breaking two more school records and posting 13 top 10 times on day two.

Joleigh scream had quite a bit to offer when she swam the fastest 100m breaststroke (1:00.21) in UC history and broke Helena Pikhartova’s (1:01.05) nine-year record. The Avon, NY native would also record the sixth fastest 100-yard butterfly (53.91) in Bearcat history. In all, she recorded five UC Top 10 times

Crye, accompanied by Gavin, Ella Chownand Kaylee Nagelalso posted the second-fastest women’s 200-yard medley relay (1:40.78) in UC history.

Grace Gavin also had a memorable meeting when she broke the Cincinnati women’s 100-yard backstroke record with a time of 54.35. In all, Gavin recorded five Bearcat top 10 times during the meet.

On the last day of the meet, the Bearcats added 11 more UC top 10 times, including Lily Jones swam the second fastest 200-yard backstroke in UC history with a time of 1:57.56. Jones also swam the third fastest 100-yard backstroke (54.52) earlier in the competition.

Ohio State won both the men’s and women’s team championships, while the UC men finished sixth with 934 points and the women finished 10th with 416 points.
