College Football Week 12 Preview: Can Maryland Upset Ohio State?

Surprises happen all the time in college football. LSU beat Alabama while Tennessee rose through the ranks thanks to a magical season.

So would it really be THAT far-fetched for the Maryland Terrapins to stun Ohio State on Saturday?

In short, yes. Ohio State, along with rival Michigan, has dominated the Big Ten throughout the 2022 college football season. With CJ Stroud at the top of the Heisman Trophy favorites and a strong defense, the Buckeyes are expected to roll again as we get closer to their top 5 match against the Wolverines. But to get to that point, the Buckeyes must first get past their divisional opponent in Maryland.

We’ve got everything you need to know about the matchup right here.

#2 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Maryland Terrapins

Where: Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium

When: 3:30 p.m. ET

As seen: ABC

Distribution: State of Ohio -27.5

Over/Under: 63.5

The matchup

The matchup is honestly quite easy. Marvin Harrison Jr. has grown into one of the best wide receivers in college football history after a stellar season to date. In the meantime, people at CJ Stroud will be wondering how high he might get in the NFL draft this season.

Maryland, on the other hand, has Tua’s brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, who plays really good football. The Terrapins were 6-2 once this season, but heavy losses to both Wisconsin and Penn State all but destroyed a top college football bowl game going to Maryland.

Tagovailoa is accurate and can leverage defense with his arm. The question will be whether Ohio State’s solid defense can stop a good pass attack. He has to be absolutely perfect if Maryland is even close in this game.

Ohio State Team Total Score – 45.5

Ohio State has averaged 59 points in their last seven encounters with Maryland. With a stronger offense, the odds of the Buckeyes fielding 45+ is more than just a smart bet, it should be pretty safe.

While there’s something to be said for the Buckeyes looking to Michigan, it’s still hard to believe that the Terrapins have the defense that can stop Stroud and this offense.

Maryland First Half Points – 9.5

I really like this bet. Buckeyes will roll, but I trust Taulia enough to get a good amount of points. Add that it’s not too far-fetched to think Ohio State could be looking at next week’s matchup, and you have a recipe for Maryland to rack up a good number of points to start the game.
